I have a seven year old! SEVEN! I feel like this is the official big kid age. Sure, she's still little (seriously, at her well-child appointment she is in the 9th percentile for height and 20th for weight) but she is only one year away from her baptism! What!? How can I have a kid this old?
Yes, I am shocked when I sit down and realize that my first baby girl is seven. But then I wonder how I am shocked because she is such a seven-year-old. I think about her personality now verses her personality just a few years ago. Ella has always been a little more Tim Burtony than most kids (fascination with all things spooky) but she also was very much into princesses, ballerinas, and dolls. Ya know, your typical girly stuff. But she has hung up those glass and ballet slippers. She no longer chooses to watch Disney Jr. or PBS kids. She would rather skip a disney dance party to go play with friends. It's all rather heartbreaking. But I do love seeing her find new friends whose personalities mesh with hers, and hear her beg to watch Ghostbusters (the real one) and settle more and more into her personality.
Some may believe that Ella's a bit of a wet mop. She is awfully shy with adults. If an adult speaks with her at all she shuts down. She refuses to look at them, talk to them, or acknowledge that they are even there. She does this with pretty much everyone. My mom on occasion. My sister most of the time. My grandma. The list goes on. For strangers, I don't mind. For family, I get a little frustrated. If we prep her she does a little better, but ONLY if we prep her.
But the girl does have a personality, and once you break through the shyness you'll see it's quite the personality. Seriously, I look at this girl and think she's so stinkin' cool. She is drawn to strong women (always has been, actually.) Maleficent, any of the stronger disney princess's, and, now that she is gaining more interest in pop culture, Lindsey Stirling. So, for her birthday we were able to arrange a little meeting with Ms. Stirling. Taking Ella to the concert was amazing enough, but watching Ella meet her role model was...amazing. I just hope Ella continues to be drawn to women who are strong, independent, and live their values. Mostly, I just really hope she continues to love Lindsey Stirling.
While Ella can be very much like me, she also can be very unlike me for which I am grateful. I wasn't the best student. Smart? Sure. Hard worker? Not so much. I was a last minute, bare minimum type. I got better in college, at least for the classes I cared about, but if I had a better work ethic I would've been stinkin' amazing. I think, at least. But thank heavens, Ella is not that way (Livie might be though...) Ella works hard in school. She reads amazing, her handwriting is great, she is loving learning, and looks forward to school every day. She hasn't even thought about faking sick yet. Even now, her homework is technically done, but she is working on reading stuff on the computer.
So, at seven-years-old here are some things about Ella:
Favorite food: grilled cheese and tomato soup
Favorite color: the whole rainbow
Favorite song: Radioactive (the Pentatonix and Lindsey Stirling cover)
Favorite holiday: all of the above
Lost teeth: 2
Dream career: a violinist (though she loves Lindsey Stirling's rock violining (totally a word) she has decided she just wants to be a regular violinist)
Favorite Toy: art set/barbies
Favorite movie: Ghostbuster/Ghost and Mr. Chicken
Favorite subject at school: art
