That sounds terrifying, doesn't it? Full Fetal Scan. Dun, dun, dunnnnnn. It actually is kinda terrifying. Especially after you've found out your child has a heart defect which often is accompanied by other defects. So naturally, this time around, we were just as terrified.
But, rather than dwell on the nerves that accompanied us to the hospital this morning, let's focus on the news we received.
First, we checked gender. And since most of my readers are on facebook, you'll know already that it's a girl! I was almost shocked. Almost because I thought it'd have to be a boy because this pregnancy has been so different. But over the last week I've been getting this feeling that it was a girl. So, when it comes to following my body vs. following my gut, I guess I should always follow my gut. Andrew has named this little girly Abigail Kathleen. Abby for short.
Next we looked at the brain and all looked great. Then....the big one. It took all of two seconds on the heart before I said, with a lot of enthusiasm and relief, "Four chambers!" And the tech confirmed I was correct. Then of course we moved to stomach (perfect) kidneys (perfect) bladder (perfect) diaphragm (perfect.) And then another look at the heart because Abby was a squirmy little thing and kept moving into better and better positions.
Seriously, she was so squirmy! Her arms and legs were flailing about so much it was hard to get really good shots of them. But we did and they, too, are perfect. Her little hands were in fists or up by her face (which made it difficult to get a 3D of her, not to mention she was snuggling the placenta, little weirdo.) But she squirmed and kicked the whole time. And if that's any indication of how she'll be on the outside, Livie won't have much competition for snuggling. Abby may just be a go-go-goer with no time for snuggles. Time will tell I guess.
And everything looked perfect. SWEET RELIEF!!! Seriously, I wanna celebrate. Let's have a party!
