I went to bed last night feeling sick to my stomach, as I have so often in the past few months(anxiety, NOT pregnancy.) I was incredibly nervous for Olivia's appointment today and wasn't sure what to expect. Between a new cardiologist and hoping for good news I ended up lying awake in bed until about three am.
But! I worried for naught! They didn't do an echo so Dr. Pinto couldn't say for sure that Olivia's function had improved but she did say that I wasn't being too optimistic that it had since she has had a big improvement in symptoms and sats. While there, her sats ranged from 77-87. At home they've been 80-81 but we think our pulse-ox reads slightly lower. I did talk to Dr. Pinto about Olivia's heart rate dropping pretty low at night (mid-low 50's) and so Olivia will get to do her first holter monitor (just a monitor she'll wear around for 24 hours that will record her rhythms during that time.) Olivia's EKG looked great, her heart sounded great, her pulses sounded great, and...drum roll please....her liver was back to normal! This was the big "heart failure" indicator last time that had us all in a tizzy so I am completely and utterly relieved.
And I just have to toot Olivia's horn for a second because she did INCREDIBLE! We lucked out and avoided a chest xray which usually starts her downward spiral at appointments so I'm sure that helped but she didn't cry once and only got nervous for about 2 seconds when the nurse was hooking her up to the pulse ox. She loved getting "titters" (stickers) for her EKG and thought her leg hug (blood pressure) was funny. Which has never happened. Normally blood pressure with her is a pain. She played so nicely while we waited and was so good at saying "tatou" to everyone who worked with her. And Tiffany, if you read this, she LOVES her new "datee" (blanky.) She had to nap with it and has been carrying it around all day.
Everything went well, yes, but there was also some scary talk. It is time to start evaluating Olivia for the fontan. I knew this time would come, and her surgery could still be a year away, but having Dr. Pinto say it's time to start the eval is a bit of a reality check. So, we'll take Olivia back down in May for a limited echo and start planning. Dr. Pinto (who hadn't seen Olivia since she was -0) was shocked and pleased with her size and did say that size-wise she is ready(YAY for my fat baby genes coursing through her tiny veins!) Dr. Pinto is hoping to wait a bit for the fontan so only time and more study of this sweet girls heart will tell for sure. Whether it's sooner or later I have a feeling it's going to be a clench your buns kind of year. So hold on and say "WEEEEEE!"
*By the way, super excited about Dr. Pinto. I liked her a lot when she diagnosed Olivia but still was nervous to see how she'd do with a baby not swimming in amniotic fluid. Olivia absolutely LOVED her. And she seemed to think a lot of Olivia too. And she laughed at my jokes which must mean she's good people.
